SLING CARE

COTTON, SHIMMER, HEMP

GENERAL WASHING

  • Unthread your sling from the rings before washing.
  • Machine Wash and Dry - Our cotton fabric is durable and can be washed in warm water and dried on high heat.
  • Do not use chlorine bleach.

SHRINKAGE

Some shrinkage may occur after drying but, our slings are cut generously to compensate for any slight change in size after washing.

WRINKLES

If your sling becomes wrinkled after wearing, washing or carrying in a diaper bag, you could, of course, iron it. But, who has the time! We recommend spraying your sling with water to get the wrinkles out. If you have never tried this with your cotton clothes, it’s like magic. This works best if the sling has been washed at least once and dried in a dryer.

Buy a spray bottle with a lot of spray power and a fine mist. You can find empty spray bottles in the garden or health & beauty sections of stores. Fill your bottle with water and spray your sling liberally. Once the sling is damp, shake and smooth with your hand to work the wrinkles out. Then hang by the rings on a hanger or hook to air dry.

REVERSIBLE SLINGS

If you have a reversible, two layer sling, spray with water on both sides when removing wrinkles. If you would like to re-crease the edge of the sling for a more defined line between the two layers of fabric, pinch the edge of the sling at the seam while damp and run fingers all around.

SILK

Silk is actually a really strong, durable fabric but, washing is not for every silk. There are two kinds of silk, piece-dyed and yarn-dyed. Piece-dyed silk is woven and then the color is applied to the whole piece. This color process is unstable and less expensive. Water may move the dye of a piece dyed silk and cause permanent discoloration. Yarn-dyed silk, is woven from colored silk thread and is more stable and more expensive. All Nato Bello silk is yarn-dyed and test washed. The only issue arises from water marks. If your sling comes in contact with small amounts of water, it may leave a water mark. Water marks have more to do with the manufacturing finish of the silk, than the fabric itself. These marks disappear when the sling is submerged entirely in water during washing. After the first washing, the finish of the silk changes and water marks rarely occur.

GENERAL WASHING

Silk possesses a certain sheen and texture that is gorgeous. When dry cleaned, this sheen and texture is preserved. When washed in water, the silk changes. It becomes softer and crinkly. Most moms like the change. The soft, washed silk makes a great sling fabric. However, if you want your silk to stay looking the same, send it to the dry cleaner. If you don’t mind a change, though, you can wash at home.

EMBROIDERED SILKS

Embroidery on silk will make the fabric pucker when washed. This happens because the fabric pulls together and crinkles, when washed, in a different way than the thread. This is easily remedied, though, by gently stretching embroidered silk in all directions with your hands when the sling is damp. After spraying your sling, grab it at the edges and gently stretch, moving your hands along the length of the sling. Stretch as needed in the opposite direction. This stretching will restore a smooth look to the fabric without ironing. If you do choose to iron, it works best to drape a towel over the ironing surface and iron silk on top of the towel on the back of the embroidery pattern. This means that the front of fabric is face down on the towel. This ironing method is not necessary but prevents the embroidery from flattening under the weight of the iron.
